A day of wrath for the Labour Whips
Finally, a rebellion they can’t contain through political brute force.
Update: The Labour government capitulated to the rebels soon after I published this post. It is pathetic of course: our country is heading towards ruin unless spending is reined in, as we have written many times on this Substack. For example, The Myth of Small State Britain:
Finally, on Tuesday over welfare, an immense rebellion the Labour Whips can’t control. And no wonder: they used brute political force to put off this day, withdrawing the whip from rebels over ordinary policy votes. That raised the stakes and forced their discontented MPs to deliver a devastating blow with huge numbers.
Drama was inevitable. Have the rebels overcooked it?
As I have written before, Labour were positioning to the Right of the Conservatives in the hope of becoming the natural party of government. It now looks like Labour high command overestimated the difficulty of governing and the bovine obedience of their MPs. It is a common mistake.
The King's Speech and Labour's strategy
The State Opening of Parliament will take place on Wednesday 17 July, hearing the first King’s Speech of this Labour Government.
Now Labour are in a predictable fix, with an uncontainable rebellion ahead and little ammunition left to use. It’s bad for the country, bad for the Government and great for the Opposition.
