On Wednesday, the Conservative party procured an Opposition Day debate on Farming and Inheritance Tax: watch the debate here and read Hansard here. The issue at stake is the change to inheritance tax on farms, which the Opposition has dubbed “the family farm tax”.
This post is not about the policy; it is about the attempt of one new Labour MP, sitting on the Government benches and representing the farming seat of Penrith, to defend his position: Markus Campbell-Savours (Penrith and Solway) (Lab). His speech is a brilliant example of the pressures on an elected parliamentarian, pulled variously by their electors, their party and their own conscience.
Here’s my analysis. Readers of a sympathetic disposition should look away now.
